Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, and Laguerre-Gaussian beams: A primer
The paper aims at presenting a didactic and self-contained overview of Gauss-Hermite and Gauss-Laguerre laser beam modes. The usual textbook approach for deriving these modes is to solve the Helmoltz electromagnetic wave equation within the paraxial approximation. Here, a different technique is presented: Using the plane wave representation of the fundamental Gaussian mode as seed function, all...
متن کاملWigner representation of Laguerre--Gaussian beams.
A phase-space description of the Laguerre-Gaussian modes is presented that points out the connection between these modes and the Hermite-Gaussian modes. We exploit the underlying phase-space symmetries to derive a closed-form expression for the Wigner distribution function of Laguerre-Gaussian modes. This expression is as compact as the one for the Hermite-Gaussian modes.
متن کاملDivergence of optical vortex beams.
We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the propagation of optical vortices in free space can be analyzed by using the width [w(z)] of the host Gaussian beam and the inner and outer radii of the vortex beam at the source plane (z=0) as defined in [Opt. Lett.39, 4364 (2014)10.1364/OL.39.004364OPLEDP0146-9592]. We also studied the divergence of vortex beams, considered as the rate of...
متن کاملGeneration of optical vortex array with transformation of standing-wave Laguerre-Gaussian mode.
We develop a novel method of creating optical vortex array by the conversion of a standing-wave Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode. Theoretically, by employing the transformational relation, the standing-wave LG mode is verified to be transformed from a pair of crisscrossed Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes, embedded with optical vortex array, consists of a TEMn,m mode and a TEMm,n mod...
متن کاملVector spherical quasi-Gaussian vortex beams.
Model equations for describing and efficiently computing the radiation profiles of tightly spherically focused higher-order electromagnetic beams of vortex nature are derived stemming from a vectorial analysis with the complex-source-point method. This solution, termed as a high-order quasi-Gaussian (qG) vortex beam, exactly satisfies the vector Helmholtz and Maxwell's equations. It is characte...
